Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a white disc 3-1/2 inches in diameter and within a 1/8-inch blue border, seven red rays terminating in base, overall a silhouette of a torii gate below two arched rows of three white stars.


Symbolism

Red, white, and blue represent the United States. Additionally, red and white points to the Forces’ operating location in Japan.  The blue border alludes to the Pacific Ocean surrounding the country.  The torii gate symbolizes unity and diplomacy. The six stars signify the Armed Forces that service the United States Forces Japan.

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved for the U.S. Army Element, United States Forces Japan on 25 January 2024

Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A silver metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1-1/4 inch in height blazoned as follows: Argent, a chief arched reversed Gules, issuant from base a stylized mountain Azure, snowcapped of the first superimposed by a demi-pagoda issuant from base Argent (Silver).  Attached to the sides of the shield a blue scroll inscribed at "CORNERSTONE OF SECURITY" in silver letters.      


Symbolism

The white shield and red arched chief are adapted from the national flag of Japan which illustrates the rising sun.  The mountain represents Mount Fuji, which holds cultural significance to Japan and emphasizes strength within the Army.  The pagoda symbolizes the peaceful alliance between the United States and Japan.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved for the U.S. Army Element, United States Forces Japan on 25 January 2024.
